Do marks matter in placements ???
The simple answer is - Yes !!!
I will only talk about the marks perspective here. What more happens in the placements, I will write another post explaining in detail about it.
Being simple and straight forward here -
- First of all, you will be given an account by the Placement Office at UVCE. Here you have to upload all the details about yourself.
- There will be a section for marks obtained during the different semesters. There you have to update the marks obtained. The marks will be verified with your original marks card by the placement coordinator.
- The companies which come to college specify the eligibility criteria - Minimum BE aggregate till 6th Semester ( or 5th if the 6th-semester results are not announced yet ), Minimum 10th aggregate ( % or GPA ), Minimum 12th aggregate, Number of Backlogs they can tolerate.
- Aggregate thing is very self-explanatory. If the company specifies that the minimum BE aggregate to be 70% ( till 6th semester ). Even after including the 6th semester's marks, if you have a 69.999999999 % also, you are NOT eligible.
- So, keep your marks proper. 1st and 2nd-year students have the advantage now only as they have a good number of attempts to keep their marks at high. Later you won't have to struggle.
- I have seen many of my classmates in a helpless situation. So, first and the best advice I usually give to my juniors is - KEEP YOUR MARKS GOOD.
- Now talking about the Backlogs! There are two types. ACTIVE backlogs and DEAD backlogs.
ACTIVE backlogs are the ones for which you have failed in a subject and the result for which is not published till now. That means you don't know that you have cleared the subject or not.
DEAD backlogs are the ones for which you had failed in a subject. But then you have cleared it in the next attempt. - ACTIVE Backlogs are DANGEROUS !!
Almost all the companies I have seen, don't allow students having active backlogs to sit in the placements. - About DEAD Backlogs. Yes, companies are okay with it. So try to clear if you have any backlog pending with you.
- One more thing. Try hard not to get a backlog during the 5th and 6th Semesters !! Figure out why !!
Now about the toppers -
- If you have an aggregate of over 90%, or you have an aggregate of 70.01%. If the requirement of the company is 70% minimum, then both of you are equally eligible for the job.
- During the interview rounds, you might have the advantage though. Interviewers usually make a smiling face if you have a good academic record.
- But then don't get overwhelmed by it. It's not a confirmation of you getting the job.
Marks + Intelligence + Knowledge + Luck -> is the deadliest combo !!!
